Can Varicose Veins Cause Restless Legs? The Surprising Connection

Person experiencing restless leg discomfort at night, illustrating the connection between varicose veins and restless leg syndrome

Do your legs feel like they just won't stay still when you lie down at night? Millions of Americans live with Restless Leg Syndrome (RLS), but for some people the underlying problem may not begin in the nerves—it may begin in the veins.

What Is Restless Leg Syndrome?

Restless Leg Syndrome is characterized by an uncomfortable urge to move the legs, often accompanied by tingling, crawling, burning, aching, or pulling sensations. Symptoms usually become worse in the evening or while resting and improve temporarily with movement.

How Could Vein Disease Be Involved?

Healthy veins return blood from the legs to the heart using one-way valves. When those valves fail, blood pools in the legs, creating chronic venous insufficiency. The resulting increase in venous pressure can contribute to swelling, inflammation, aching, heaviness, and nighttime discomfort.

Signs Your Restless Legs May Be Related to Vein Disease

  • Varicose veins
  • Leg swelling
  • Heavy or tired legs
  • Aching after standing
  • Brown skin discoloration
  • Night cramps

What Does Research Show?

Studies have found that some patients with chronic venous insufficiency experienced significant improvement in restless leg symptoms after treatment of venous reflux. Not every case of RLS is caused by vein disease, but the association is strong enough that patients with both conditions deserve a comprehensive vein evaluation.

Diagnosis

A painless duplex ultrasound evaluates blood flow, valve function, venous reflux, previous blood clots, and overall circulation.

Treatment

If venous insufficiency is identified, minimally invasive outpatient procedures performed under local anesthesia may improve circulation by closing diseased veins and redirecting blood through healthier veins.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can varicose veins cause restless legs?

Some patients with chronic venous insufficiency experience restless leg symptoms, and appropriately selected patients may improve after vein treatment.

Will vein treatment cure RLS?

Not necessarily. Restless Leg Syndrome has many causes, but vein disease is one that should not be overlooked.
